The Thuringian Forest is known for its hiking and winte sports as well as landscape of mountains, rivers and lakes. The pretty town of Eisenach can be found to the north of the Forest and the Hainich National Park.

The town itself is easy to explore on foot and has much historic German architecture to see. In Eisenach hotels, both old and more modern, fit in with the traditional feel of the town. There are a wide range of facilities available, from hotels with spa facilities to those with traditional décor and restaurants, to those offering contemporary bars.

Eisenach's most well known landmark is Wartburg Castle. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, the Castle has many historical associations. It was founded in 1068, it later inspired Wagner's opera Tannhauser, was the home of Countess Elisabeth who was canonized after her death and was where Luther translated the New Testament. As well as its architectural features, it is also home to an interesting collection of art, tapestries and crafts from the 11th to the 19th centuries.

There are many other sights to explore in the town. Luther's house is one of the oldest and most beautiful houses in the area. An exhibition, the Protestant Parsonage Archive and a Bible Cafe can all be found here. Bach's house contains the largest collection relating to Bach's life and work in the world and is arranged as a walk through musical work. The industrial past of the area can be seen at The Old Malthouse, which is also home to a Jazz Archive and hosts performances from acclaimed jazz musicians in its cellar.

The town's historical connections do not end there. The 18th century Town Palace, where Goethe frequently stayed, is today home to the Thuringian Museum. The Reuter-Wagner Museum contains one of the largest Wagner exhibitions in the world. St George's Church was where St. Elisabeth was married and was also where Bach was baptized.

There are many other towns to explore in the region, many of which have links to historically important people. Erfurt, the capital of the region, has a history that dates back to the Middle Ages and is architecturally interesting with a number of well preserved medieval and Renaissance buildings. The town of Jena is known for its intellectual past and association with notable people such as Goethe, Schiller and Hegel. The Expressionist painter Otto Dix was born in Gera and an art gallery with more than four hundred of his works can be found here, as can an attractive market square, an ornate town hall and a series of caves and tunnels that extend beneath the town Thuringia is Germany's most popular region for walkers.
